Apparently, there is a 28-day program in England for technology addicts.

Are you getting the shakes or the cold-sweats if you go a day without your iPhone or checking your Twitter account? It’s possible you need to get in touch with these folks. And – if the research is solid – you’re not alone in your plight.

BBC News reports:

“The programme is designed for young people who spend large amounts of time each day playing computer games or using social network websites. When deprived they become “chronically agitated and irritable” said the treatment’s founder Dr Richard Graham.

“The number of genuine technology addicts is fairly low but it could rise with online gaming where, unlike standalone gaming, the game never stops,” said Mark Griffiths, Professor of gambling studies at Nottingham Trent University.”

There’s also an interesting article posted in last year’s PurePakastani.com that dealt with young people’s use and abuse of cell-phones.

From the article:

“Recent studies have shown that young heavy mobile phone users have slower minds and poorer memory capacities in comparison with those who use the mobile phone moderately. They show slower responses and are also are likely to commit more mistakes.”

I don’t think the technology is the problem. We’ve used and abused technology for centuries. Addictive personalities will find ANYTHING to get fixated on.

What’s fascinating about all this is that – you can’t really be abstinent from technology all-together in this age. So – addictions like this become similar to the struggles of – say – an eating disorder. You can’t remove food from a person entirely. That’s just not possible.

When so much of our lives are led online – how do you remove that aspect from someone’s existence entirely? It’s an age-old question: At what point do we become so dependent on the tools that we’ve made that they threaten to subsume us?

And is that okay?

We developed farming implements that we depended on for our survival for eons. Is this just another step? Is this just another set of tools that we’ve built that are going to aid our social evolution?

The PERIMETER INSTITUTE FOR THEORETICAL PHYSICS has released a documentary for educators that looks pretty cool. A group of scientists – led by Stephen Hawking – discuss the strange world of quantum physics. It’s broadcasting in many markets soon around the globe.

Fascinating article from Science Centric that reports:

“A German-Spanish research group, split between the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching and the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), is using the principles of an iconic quantum mechanics thought experiment – Schroedinger’s superpositioned cat – to test for quantum properties in objects composed of as many as one billion atoms, possibly including the flu virus.

With this new technique, the researchers suggest that viruses are one type of object that could be probed. Albeit speculatively, the researchers hope that their technique might offer a route to experimentally address questions such as the role of life and consciousness in quantum mechanics.”

Mathematicians around the globe shall be celebrating a number today of such infinite, vast complexity that it’s been known to drive men mad.

If any of these mad-med mathematicians happen to be in NYC’s Hell’s Kitchen this afternoon – I’ll be hitting a theater fundraiser AND – hell – after a few drinks I might get a wild hair and do a minor pub crawl to celebrate this kooky little holiday. The pub-crawl will go in a circle, naturally.

WIRED.COM posted a great article on some new developments in quantum computing.

It seems that a quantum computer’s “brain” works pretty much like a human brain. And that means that certain attempts by scientists to be fastidiously ordered are pretty much null and void.

From the article:

“The new study, published in the March 12 Science, suggests that anxious physicists should just relax. A group of researchers at the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby have shown that randomly arranged materials can trap light just as well as ordered ones.

…Like a human brain, a quantum brain is not a perfectly ordered structure, he says. “Nature doesn’t need a symmetric structure. It just needs your brain to be working.”

Another testament to my dirty, DIRTY MIND…but I think this is just brilliant…
